Rockholm Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat, also known as Rockholm at the Light House Beach, is a boutique coastal retreat in Kovalam, Kerala. Set beside the Arabian Sea near the landmark lighthouse, it combines residential Ayurveda, yoga, dietary guidance and sea-facing accommodation. Its intimate setting brings consultation and traditional therapies into a daily routine supported by meals, rest and mindful movement.
The retreat retains the character of its earlier seaside hotel through minimalist Art Deco architecture and warm interiors. Private balconies, coastal gardens and open views of the water create places to pause between scheduled activities. Ayurveda forms the foundation of the stay, with individual care guiding the relationship between treatment, food and daily practice.
Design and Landscape
Rockholm's landscape opens towards the Arabian Sea, with coconut trees, bougainvillea and planting adapted to the salty coastal air. Garden paths and resting spaces connect the guest areas, while the herbal garden introduces plants associated with Ayurvedic practice. Meditation spaces near the garden offer sea views and opportunities for quiet observation of the surroundings.
The buildings combine Art Deco styling with natural timber and decorative tiles. Sea-facing balconies extend the living spaces outdoors, and the rocky shoreline and nearby lighthouse give the retreat its distinctive coastal character. Light, air and garden views remain part of the experience as guests move between accommodation, dining and wellness spaces.
Founders and Ayurvedic Heritage
Rockholm's history begins with Peter Christian and his family, who acquired the land in the mid-1960s and initially built a home. The property became a seaside hotel in 1979, with Roger Christian involved in its daily operation. Its later renovation retained the Rockholm name and coastal identity, and the hotel reopened on 1 November 2019.
Owned by Ranjit Mathew, Rockholm is connected with The Nattika Beach Ayurveda Resort in Thrissur. Its present identity centres on Kerala Ayurveda and yoga, bringing the property's hospitality history into a residential wellness setting.
Ayurveda Philosophy and Approach
The retreat follows classical Ayurvedic principles, bringing therapies, herbal preparations, diet, yoga and meditation into an individual care plan. Body constitution and current concerns guide the approach, with daily habits and food considered alongside treatment. The aim is to help guests establish a manageable routine during their residential stay.
Personalised dietary guidance complements the Ayurveda and yoga plan. The retreat also uses Nattika Life Ayurvedic oils, produced within its associated wellness group in Thrissur. Consultation, traditional treatment practice and a quiet coastal setting together shape the Rockholm approach to wellbeing.
Personalised Treatment Planning
An Ayurvedic consultation forms the starting point for treatment. Doctors discuss medical history, current concerns, diet, sleep, stress and lifestyle, and use Ayurvedic observation, examination and questioning to assess the individual. The distinction between Prakriti, the person's constitution, and Vikruthi, the current dosha imbalance, informs the care plan.
Guests receive guidance on therapies, medicines, diet and consultation timings. Dietary recommendations are communicated to the restaurant and kitchen, and the program can change as the person's condition and progress are reviewed. Doctors also advise on activity restrictions during particular therapies. Yoga postures are selected through discussion between the medical and yoga teams, allowing movement and rest to fit the treatment schedule.
Treatment Programs
Rockholm offers Rejuvenation and Panchakarma stays, with at least seven nights recommended for rejuvenation and a minimum of fourteen nights for Panchakarma. The treatment schedule is decided after consultation, rather than being identical for every guest. Residential packages bring accommodation, vegetarian full-board meals, diet consultation, Ayurveda and yoga into the same stay.
The treatment framework includes Shodhana, the classical purification approach; Shamana, pacification; and Rasayana, rejuvenation. Where prescribed, Panchakarma is organised through preparation, the main procedures and subsequent care. Therapies can include Abhyanga, Pizhichil and Nasya, selected according to the doctor's assessment. The balance of procedures, medicines and rest reflects individual suitability and treatment requirements.
Doctors and Wellness Experts
Dr. Sreekala Santosh, Chief Physician, leads the Ayurveda centre and its team of doctors, dieticians and therapists. Her experience includes work at the group's Nattika property in Thrissur. The medical team coordinates consultation, treatment planning and supervision throughout the stay.
The physician team includes Dr. Gokul M.G, whose BAMS qualification is from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, and consultant Dr. Ajeesh S.G, a BAMS graduate of Sree Narayana Ayurvedic Studies and Research College, Kollam. Ayurvedic physicians Dr. Anjali Raj and Dr. Rinu Francis also support individual care. Panchakarma therapists deliver prescribed therapies, while yoga instructors guide movement, breathing
Naivedya, Rockholm's alfresco sea-facing restaurant, brings Ayurvedic dietary principles into a setting overlooking the Arabian Sea. Its cuisine combines coastal influences with international flavours, using fresh seasonal produce in a changing menu. During Ayurveda treatment stays, vegetarian full-board meals form part of the residential experience, with individual dietary recommendations coordinated between the medical team, dieticians and kitchen.
Meal choices are shaped around the guest's constitution, treatment plan and dietary requirements. The culinary team works with guests and doctors to accommodate food allergies and individual preferences. Salads, juices, main dishes, fruit and desserts feature within the dining repertoire, with their suitability guided by the prescribed diet. Live cooking demonstrations introduce spices, ingredients, recipes and preparation techniques, giving guests practical ideas to explore after returning home. Alcohol is not served in the restaurant or elsewhere on the retreat premises.
Rockholm's coastal setting offers places to rest between therapies, from sea-facing gardens and quiet outdoor seating to the swimming pool's deck overlooking Lighthouse Beach and the Arabian Sea. Coconut palms, bougainvillea and plants adapted to coastal conditions surround garden paths and meditation spaces. The nearby shoreline adds another dimension to time spent outdoors.
Bodhi Yoga Hall hosts guided practice in an airy seaside environment. The activity schedule includes meditation, Progressive Yoga and gentler Yoga Lite sessions, with pranayama, mantra chanting and Yoga Nidra on a rotational basis. Yoga guidance takes account of experience and individual requirements, and participation is coordinated with the Ayurveda treatment plan.
The wider leisure program introduces aspects of Kerala's everyday culture and wellness traditions. Doctor-guided herbal garden visits, Ayurveda talks and cooking demonstrations provide opportunities to learn, while mehndi art, tea-time gatherings and live music create informal moments to meet other guests. These experiences complement the retreat's quieter spaces, allowing a balance of participation and rest during the stay.
The Rockholm Ayurveda Center brings consultation, prescribed therapies and dietary guidance into a residential care setting beside the sea. Treatment spaces admit natural light and coastal air, while consultation areas and steam-bath facilities support the daily care routine. The Urja Ayurveda block adds sea-facing treatment rooms with handcrafted teakwood tables, a dedicated doctor's consultation room, reception and a waiting area.
Treatment planning begins with an Ayurvedic assessment of medical history, current concerns, lifestyle and body constitution. Doctors consider Prakriti and Vikruthi, the individual's constitution and current dosha imbalance, when selecting therapies, medicines and dietary recommendations. Plans can be adjusted during the stay, with guidance on rest and activity communicated alongside the treatment schedule.
The centre's approach encompasses Shodhana, Shamana and Rasayana, the classical frameworks of purification, pacification and rejuvenation. Rejuvenation and Panchakarma stays are organised around individual suitability, with preparation and aftercare forming part of prescribed purification programs. Chief Physician Dr. Sreekala Santosh leads the medical team, supported by Ayurvedic physicians, dieticians and therapists. Yoga teachers coordinate suitable movement and relaxation practices with the doctors, while the herbal garden offers an introduction to plants associated with Ayurvedic practice.
