At Athreya Ayurvedic Centre, Kumarakom, food is central to healing. Meals are customized to each guest’s constitution (Prakriti) and treatment plan, using time-tested Ayurvedic principles to stimulate rejuvenation, detoxification, and long-term wellness.
Core Dietary Principles Followed at Athreya
Athreya’s dietary guidance is rooted in classical Kerala Ayurveda and is based on centuries of successful health practices. Below are the fundamental principles and recommendations:
Daily Food Habits & Recommendations
Wholesome Ayurvedic Meals: Served fresh and aligned with your treatment plan, meals are designed to balance the six Ayurvedic tastes—sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent—for complete nourishment.
Early & Light Dinner: Dinner is recommended in moderate quantities at least 3 hours before bedtime—enough to satisfy hunger but not cause heaviness.
Warm Herbal Water: Sipping hot water infused with dry ginger and coriander seeds helps clear congestion, supports digestion, and improves detoxification. Drink at bedtime and upon waking.
Avoid at Night:
Oily or deep-fried foods
Non-vegetarian items (meat, fish)
Curd/yogurt, vinegar-based items, cheese
Ice-cold beverages or citrus combined with dairy
Heavy-to-digest or gas-producing foods
Bedtime Oil Application: Applying 10–15 drops of Ksheerabala Thailam or coconut oil to the crown (bregma) for 30 minutes before sleep promotes deep rest (except for those with cold, edema, or respiratory concerns—castor oil is advised instead).
Avoid Frequent Snacking: Maintain a 3–6 hour gap between meals unless diabetic or extremely hungry. Avoid unnecessary fasting.
Superfoods Recommended:
Curry leaves & garlic (10g) – detox support; avoid garlic if prone to heat or ulcers
Sesame seed paste (10–20g) – bone nourishment (on an empty stomach)
Green gram soup (Mudga) – protein-rich and tissue-building
Indian gooseberry (Amla), pomegranate, honey, cow ghee – daily use in proper doses
Rock salt – limited to 1–2g/day for internal balance
Weekly Juice Detox: A once-a-week juice-only day (e.g., pomegranate, aloe vera, or amla) is recommended. Avoid combining citrus juices like pineapple or lemon with dairy.
Probiotic Support: Buttermilk (lassi), preferably processed with turmeric and curry leaves, supports digestion and metabolic balance.
Ideal Meal Pattern:
Hearty breakfast (if hungry)
Moderate lunch
Very light or negligible dinner
Sleep & Screen Hygiene for Optimal Digestion
Sleep Matters: Delayed or inadequate sleep disrupts digestion, reduces immunity, and accelerates aging.
Digital Detox: Disconnect from screens at least 2 hours before sleep. Use Yoga Nidra audio (provided at check-in) to unwind and reduce stress.
Foods to Avoid During Treatment
Bakery items, maida-based foods, and junk food
Carbonated or artificially sweetened drinks
Heavy meals when not hungry
Cheese and fermented dairy at night or early morning
At Athreya, every meal is a medicinal experience, crafted to align your internal rhythm with nature and support your healing journey. Guests are lovingly guided on how to carry these practices into their daily lives for sustainable wellness.
