The name SITARAM, derived from 'Sita' (Goddess of Harvest) and 'Ram' (7th Avatar of Lord Vishnu), reflects the commitment to harvesting medicinal plants and creating life-enhancing medicines. Sitaram, with its Beach Retreat on the Arabian Sea and Mountain Retreat in the Munnar Plantations, offers a holistic healing experience in the lap of nature. The 100 years of legacy and tradition set Sitaram apart in the realm of Ayurveda resorts in Kerala.
A century of healing began in 1921, blessed by HH Kochi Maharaja Rama Varma Kunjikkidavu Thampuran and Shri. Parukutty Nethyar Amma. Sitaram started its journey, by harvesting medicinal plants, making people aware of Ayurveda's goodness, and emphasizing the importance of understanding and treating health.
Starting as Sitaram Anglo Ayurveda Pharmacy in 1921, the organization evolved into Sitaram Ayurveda Pvt. Ltd., embodying ancestral values and the path bestowed by the deities of Punkunnam Sitaramaswamy Temple. Today, Sitaram Beach Retreat and Sitaram Mountain Retreat stand as destinations for inner peace and sustainable healing under Sitaram Ayurveda Pharmacy Ltd. Dr. Ramanathan Devaraja Iyer, the great-grandson of Sri Parameshwara Iyer, leads the legacy, ensuring optimum health without compromising Ayurvedic tradition.

More about Sitaram Mountain Retreat

TRIKAYA RESTAURANT

Trikaya, the in-house restaurant, invites guests to an exceptional dining experience in a serene ambiance. The ambiance encourages the transcendence of screens and mindful eating, connecting with the beauty surrounding guests. Beyond a meal, guidance is offered to cultivate sustainable dietary habits, extending the benefits beyond the stay. Consultation with the reservation team allows immersion in culinary experiences and learning the art of preparing nutritious recipes.
Ayurveda asserts that when food is wrong, no medicine can help, and when it's right, there's no need for medicine. Food, akin to a non-prescriptive drug, can be a powerful distraction, especially for those grappling with anxiety and depression. Emotional eating, a form of addictive behavior, often leads to unhealthy choices, providing a temporary sense of comfort. In the "slow food vegetarian restaurant" at Sitaram, the team serves with love and care, offering food tailored to the well-being of guests. Ingredients are sourced from reliable local providers, and strict avoidance of artificial additives, refined flour, refined sugar, and preservatives is maintained. The use of oil is minimized to enhance the dining experience. In Sitaram Retreats don’t have buffets

Sitaram Retreats are crafted as spaces for holistic transformation, addressing current health issues, and reshaping behaviors. Acknowledging the pivotal role the environment plays in reshaping deeply conditioned behaviors complements the individual's willpower.

The Concept of Six Tastes

These tastes are not just perceived by the tongue but also act on the body. Here's a breakdown of the six tastes:

Sweet:
  - Considered sweet are ghee, fruits, milk, legumes, and grains.
  - Sweet reduces Pitta and Vatha, promoting strength, refreshment, hair growth, and vital energy. Excessive use can lead to imbalances like obesity and poor digestion.

Sour:
  - Includes yogurt, citrus fruits, unripe mango, and fermented beverages.
  - Sour taste increases Kapha and Pitta, aiding in digestion but causing issues like flabbiness, diminished vision, itching, and fever in excess.

Salt:
  - Salty tastes come from natural salts and seafood.
  - Salt reduces Vatha, lubricating tissues, improving digestion, and causing perspiration. Excess can lead to inflammatory swellings and weakness.

Acrid-Spicy/ Pungent:
  - This category includes chilly, spices, etc.
  - This taste reduces Kapha and increases Pitta and Vata. It aids digestion but excess can cause thirst, muscle cramps, and giddiness.

Bitter:
  - Most vegetables, especially dark leafy ones, herbs, and spices like turmeric are bitter.
  - Bitter taste reduces Pitta and Kapha and increases Vata, addressing issues like loss of appetite and skin diseases.

Astringent:
  - Reducing Pitta and Kapha, astringent tastes are found in raw vegetables, beans, and tea.
  - Astringent tastes purify the blood, reduce fat deposition, and cause dryness. Excess can lead to discomfort, abdominal distension, and constipation.

The Concept of Six Tastes

These tastes are not just perceived by the tongue but also act on the body. Here's a breakdown of the six tastes:

Aama Pachana Aahara (APA):
  - Food to improve digestion and reduce inflammation. The signature diet at Sitaram includes fruits, vegetables, rice, side dishes, and different pancakes.

Poorva Virechanam Aahara (PVirA):
  - Served before 'VIRECHANAM' for one or two days, this diet is moderately spicy with an added sour taste, including fruits like pineapple and citrus.

Peyadi Aahara (PA):
  - Consisting of only rice gruel and a small amount of a side dish, this diet is given when digestion is low, especially during ghee therapy and cleansing days.

Five Meal Plan (FMP):
  - This plan serves normal food but in lesser quantities. Fruits or boiled vegetables are served between regular meal timings, designed to reduce unwanted body weight.

Specific Diets:
  - Tailored plans for gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance, diabetes, and other health conditions. Allergies are strictly taken into consideration.

These tastes are not just perceived by the tongue but also act on the body. Here's a breakdown of the six tastes:

Preparatory Phase:
  - Light foods are served to aid and prepare the body for purificatory therapies.

Low Appetite and Irregular Bowel Movements:
  - Specific herbs are added to increase Agni and strengthen metabolism.

High Food Cravings:
  - A five-time meal plan is implemented to retrain the mind and body to extract maximum energy from standard portion sizes.

Panchakarma Treatments:
  - Specific diets are followed to activate particular doshas in the body before eliminating toxins. This ensures the effectiveness of the treatment.

Post-Purification Phase:
  - Sensitivity is considered, and extremely light foods like soups, especially Kanji (rice soup), are served. Gradual reintroduction of normal and nourishing foods follows.

Specialized Diets:
  - Conscious diets monitoring glycemic index for diabetics and anti-inflammatory diets for joint issues.

The first consultation is foundational in the healing journey. Be open and honest, avoiding self-diagnosis. Explain symptoms vividly.
Walking in with a preconceived diagnosis may hinder fresh insights.
Describe habits clearly. For example, if consuming 4-5 cups of tea daily, withdrawal headaches during treatment can be addressed with suitable herbal tea substitutes.
Prioritize symptoms to improve upon.
For conditions like skin issues, sleep disturbances, and body pain concurrently, specify which affects life the most.
Regularly meet the doctor during the stay at Sitaram Beach Retreat to track progress and make necessary adjustments.
Share emotional concerns, as mental states profoundly impact physical health. Open communication aids in understanding the underlying emotional aspects.

The location is absolutely breathtaking; it couldn't be any more picturesque. The villas offer unparalleled comfort and boast expansive views of the enchanting forest. The staff is an absolute delight; they couldn't be more friendly, polite, accommodating, and genuinely exceptional in every way. The Ayurveda spa is an oasis of pure relaxation and therapeutic bliss. The food provided is an absolute culinary delight, not only incredibly healthy but also irresistibly delicious, leaving our souls truly nourished. Nestled amidst the breathtaking plantations of cardamom, coffee, cashew, jackfruit, and other lush greenery, Kaivalyam Wellness Retreat undeniably reinforces the belief that Kerala is truly a divine paradise. The days spent there seemed to fly by, providing a much-needed respite from our bustling schedules. All our breakfasts and dinners at the retreat were an absolute culinary delight, each day bringing new and tantalizing dishes served with an assortment of fresh fruits and sprouts. We owe our gastronomic delight to the culinary genius, Chef Arvind Kumar. Our servers, particularly Ashish and many others, went above and beyond to take impeccable care of us daily, their unwavering dedication and infectious smiles adding an extra layer of joy to our experience. Dr. Mojin, the Ayurvedic expert, graced us with a consultation and provided invaluable recommendations for our treatments, offering a wealth of knowledge and exceptional guidance. The Ayurvedic massages we received were nothing short of heavenly, surpassing any previous experiences. The talented therapists, Sukanya and Shamita, performed their bodywork with unparalleled skill, expertly melting away all our knots and tensions, leaving us in a state of complete bliss and rejuvenation.

A beautiful retreat resort with the kindest staff (warm and helpful in every way) and the most amazing organic healthy veg food ever! There is Yoga offered twice per day either by Harish the owner (a Yoga Master) or another Yoga teacher who was excellent. There is chanting every evening at 6:30 and bird walks in the early morning. You can also take a cooking class were we cooked three different dishes and of course sampled them all. Their kitchen is spotlessly clean and filled with organic foods and spices, many from their own plantation. The grounds are beautiful and set in a cardamon plantation with trees and flowers. Waking up every morning to the singing birds was heaven for me. The Ayurveda treatments there are excellent as well. The driveway to get to and from the resort is an experience in itself. They have a fab jeep driver that takes everyone from top to bottom and back again. No smoking or alcohol here which is just what I wanted. I look forward to returning soon.! Hope there will be room for me............

We spent 5 days at the retreat and was one of the most beautiful surroundings we have stayed at while traveling in India. The service, hospitality and there willingness to help and accommodate with our requests were outstanding! The two day package with touring and meals was beautifully planned, the guide was wonderful and flexible. Every morning we practiced Shivananda Yoga with the owner Harish and he was the best yoga teacher we had met so far. Harish was very open and communicative about Ayurveda, yoga and meditation. We understood from him that the Retreat will be shifting towards a wellness center in October, 2016 and we are planning to return for the atmosphere and learning opportunities. The Retreat team deserves special "thanks" for the family atmosphere and impeccable service.

My wife and I stayed in Munnar for just one night but after seeing this hotel I wish we had stayed longer. The property is amazingly peaceful, serene and beautiful. The staff are excellent and the food is great. Even though the food is vegetarian I did not miss non-veg. One has to take a jeep for about 5 minutes to get to the retreat from the highway since the road is bumpy and a car would bottom out. The accommodations are beautiful and comfortable with a personal balcony on some suites. The view is a magic of greenery and small pathways lit up with little lights. There is a sit out in front of the restaurant with an excellent view. The retreat provides various programs like yoga and Ayurveda. They also organize nature trips to spice gardens etc.,. The retreat is a few kms from Munnar town but is the best place to stay in Munnar area.

This is a dream place. Peaceful retreat in middle of the beautiful nature. Everything is done with a good taste here, buildings are designed to fit to the landscape. The rooms are spacious and nice, each with the own balcony or terrace. Beds are so comfortable, I had my best sleep there during the 3 weeks trip to India. We went there for two nights. The first thought on arrival was, that I would like to stay there for a longer time. My wish was heard as because of the strike in Kerala we were not able to travel to Thekkady as planned and stayed for one more night. The place is ca 7 km from Munnar. Because of the strike we did not see more of Munnar than this retreat itself but there was enough to do and we had lovely time. Our mornings started with yoga session by Harish himself. Then we enjoyed the real Kerala breakfast, had a nice walks in spice gardens and tea plantation nearby, had a nice lunch, then some time just to be and enjoy the fresh air and peace, then time for delicious dinner... There is a selection of board games available and small library in the restaurant house. And if you wish, their driver can take you to Kathakali or martial art show, or to have an ayurveda treatment. It would be perfect to have a small spa inside the estate (as it is planned), then there would be no reason to leave the place.

A group of 4 of us stayed here for a few nights and the place is exceptionally clean, and the gardens are beautiful. As the other reviews say the owner is very helpful in terms of making arrangements for the stay and the staff are also extremely well mannered and polite. The rooms are very very clean and very comfortable. Food was good, but the curries did lack a little depth for India, except the morning Sambar's. We all found the Yoga a bit impersonal and a bit routine, hence why I'm not really saying that this lives up to the retreat title of the place, we found a strange mix of guests also added to this - it felt more like just a nicer hotel in Munnar with a lovely garden and yoga thrown in rather than a true retreat. Munnar does not have that great an offering at this price, so we shouldn't complain, if you want somewhere clean and pretty to stay then this is a good place - I do think that the website is quite misleading in terms of the description of the retreat element. If you do decide to take a massage via one of the spa's who have leaflets in reception then take a look see visit before hand as we all experienced very lacklustre massages with the 2 companies we tried and one girl travelling felt quite uncomfortable with the forced nudity involved in her massage. One of our party is a qualified Ayurveda masseuse, and he said that the massage he received for £20 didn't follow any of the practises he was used to and again, felt poor in quality vs cost.
