Ayurveda, derived from ‘Ayur’ (life) and ‘Veda’ (knowledge), is the ancient "Science of Life" that emphasizes the profound impact of diet, or ‘ahara’, on both physical and emotional well-being. According to Ayurvedic wisdom, food is considered medicinal when consumed correctly, preventing disease by maintaining balance. Conversely, an improper diet leads to the accumulation of toxins, or ‘ama’, in the body, the root cause of illness. While Ayurveda acknowledges that diet alone may not cure all diseases, it underscores the pivotal role of a balanced diet in disease prevention and management.

Note: Alcohol is not served at the resort.

Carnoustie Ayurveda & Wellness Resort houses a spa named Aryavaidyasala, where the ancient Indian mystic art of healing is practiced. This scientific art, known as Ayurveda, harmonizes the mind and body with Mother Nature. Derived from Sanskrit, the compound word Ayurveda implies two connected ideas: ‘the science of life’ and ‘the art of living’. This traditional health science has been practiced in the herb-rich land of Kerala for over 5000 years. Today, individuals from around the world travel to this Ayurvedic healing hub, seeking freedom from their ailments. Accompanying the healing touch of Ayurveda, the spa also offers the finest Yoga and Naturopathy treatments. Specially designed rejuvenation, body purification, slimming, anti-stress, and beauty programs are available at the resort to help individuals relax, detox, and improve their well-being. Additionally, a wide range of spa treatments is offered, including Marine Pedicure (Ultra Exfoliation with Marine Mud and Salt), Re-balancing Back Treatment, Herbal Body Scrub, Aromaceane Treatment, Post-Workout Massages/Deep Tissue Massages, Foot Reflexology, Manicure, and much more, enhancing the rejuvenating experience.

The Ayurveda diet is India's age-old wellness plan, rooted in the key principles of Ayurveda. This holistic approach is centered on three bio-energy forces called doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha. Each person has a unique combination of these doshas, known as their prakruti. Daily menus are meticulously handcrafted to meet dietary requirements prescribed by an Ayurveda Doctor. Most of the vegetables and herbs used in food preparation come from an Organic Garden. Even the water served is infused with herbs to enhance its dietary values. These diet menus are designed after a thorough assessment of an individual's body constitution and current health condition. The principles of Ayurveda assert that the key to curing all diseases and health issues begins with dietary changes. This diet aids in the generation of new cells and enhances the survival period of existing cells, helping individuals live a longer and healthier life. Unlike many weight-loss fads that deplete essential nutrients along with fats, the Ayurveda diet promotes healthy weight loss by tailoring meals to a person’s Vikriti (abnormal health condition). This means that even those suffering from anorexia can benefit and become healthier.
According to Ayurveda, the digestive system is the source of energy, which is distributed to all other parts of the body. The first effect of food intake is on the digestive system. Once balance is achieved, energy blocks within the body are released, ensuring a better flow of energy.

Marma Chikitsa, dating back to around 1500 BC in southern India, has its origins in the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu, which first identified marma points—vital areas that, when correctly stimulated, promote healing, and when mishandled, can cause harm or even be fatal. Legend attributes this knowledge from Lord Shiva to Parvathi and subsequently to Tamil sage Agastya, enriching its practice over millennia. Described extensively in the Susruta Samhita, marma points are junctions where various tissues meet, influencing energy flow and vitality throughout the body. These points are pivotal in Ayurvedic medicine, aligning major marma points with the body's chakras and traditionally protected during battles.
Marma therapy aims to restore balance by addressing disruptions in prana (life force), particularly associated with vata dosha, which governs movement and circulation. By clearing pathways and promoting energy flow, it treats a range of conditions from muscular and joint pain to neurological disorders like trigeminal neuralgia and paralysis. Marma Chikitsa not only alleviates physical ailments but also enhances mental and emotional flexibility, making it a comprehensive healing practice deeply integrated into Ayurvedic traditions.

Kalaripayattu's origins trace back to mentions in the Rig Veda and Atharva Veda, with Tamil Sangam Literature also noting its role in ancient Indian nobility's disputes. Known as the precursor to martial arts, Kalaripayattu is revered for its effective defense techniques and fitness benefits. Derived from the Sanskrit "Khaloorika," meaning training ground, "Kalari" combines gymnasium and duel, integrating movements inspired by animals like snakes and lions. At Carnoustie, tailored Kalari training programs enhance agility, flexibility, and strength, catering to individual needs. The practice improves physical conditioning, mental resilience, and self-confidence, offering holistic health benefits beyond mere fitness routines in today's demanding world.

Naturopathy operates on the principle that diseases stem from a decline in the body's vitality. It utilizes the holistic approach of Panchamahabhuthas - earth, water, light, air, and space - to rejuvenate vitality and restore health. This system focuses on treating the root cause of ailments by emphasizing lifestyle regulation. Naturopathy holds that the body possesses innate healing capabilities, capable of self-repair and recovery. It identifies lower vitality and toxin accumulation as primary disease factors, advocating for their elimination and the enhancement of vital energy through natural means.

Property: The property is vast and open to nature. Has its own small beach. All rooms and dining area designed in a hut style. Rooms: All rooms are not yet open post Covid. Though upgrade is offered. We stayed in Mallika and it’s very good. Rooms are very clean. Only concern was few mosquitoes which was obvious due to plants all around. Unlimited supply of bottled drinking water, tea coffee etc is provided. It also has ionizer machine. We couldn’t find Bose speakers in room as was mentioned. Restaurant: Excellent food and service. We were offered healthy food and beverages as prescribed by doctors. The restaurant chef was kind enough to accept our diet and palate preferences and on the last day of our departure they prepared elaborate meal ( on request). Treatment & Massage: The doctor was knowledgeable and kind. The therapist were all trained people and were very professional. The property follows Ayurveda practices. Beach: Though it’s a private beach but it’s not limited to the presence of resort guests but lot of local fishermen also. More attention to the cleaning & Maintainance of the beach is advised.

This was my first experience at a wellness and Ayurveda resort and I must say I’m addicted. I have a stressful job that has impacted my sleep, lifestyle and even my relationships. After spending only 6 day, I was able to slow down, focus on my wellness and what is really important without compromising other aspects of life. I also became an avid yoga practitioner while before now I was never really committed. Special thank you to the amazing, warm and caring Dr. Mobi and her amazing team for the Ayurvedic treatment and arranging the yoga and pranayama sessions. Also a big thank you to the wonderful restaurant staff including but not limited to Joseph, Rubin and the rest of the group who went above and beyond to make our time there extra special. Additionally, Jay at reception was always thoughtful and anticipating our needs and ensuring top service at all times. Thank you all for making this short period such a memorable one

I recently returned from a 22 days stay at Carnoustie Ayurveda & Wellness Resort and I can say without a doubt that my experience at the resort was life changing. Prior to booking my trip, I spent a few months researching (and reading reviews much like the one I am writing now) on where I could find the best authentic, Ayurveda experience in India. Having narrowed down my research to three resorts I decided to stay at Carnoustie as they had aa beautiful beach and it came across as a good mix of clinic and resort. To be clear, this resort specializes in Ayurveda programs that target specific health needs such as Detox, Diabetic Management, Healing, Anti-aging, Sports Medicine and Weight loss. Treatments include specific Ayurvedic massage, Ayurvedic diet, yoga and meditation as part of the targeted program. Once my reservation was made, I was asked for my flight information and arrival time as the resort would arrange for a car to pick us up on arrival. (I have travelled to India twice before and knowing that the long flight from Canada and the 10.5 hour time difference can feel like a time warp I had arranged to stay at a hotel close to the airport for a night so my body could acclimatize to the time change.) An email confirmation was sent the day before we were to be picked up indicating the name of the driver and pick up time. We were picked up and driven the almost 2 hours South to Carnoustie, our driver very skilled at dealing with Kochi traffic. Upon arrival our bags were whisked away while we were greeted at reception with a welcome drink and then sent on our way to lunch. Personalized menus awaited us a our reserved table where we had our first taste of an Ayurvedic meal. From here I could probably write a novel about my entire experience while at Carnoustie but if you are like me, you are reading this to decide if you should consider booking here so I'll break it down into specific categories. Accommodation and Property: We stayed in a one bedroom, air conditioned villa with a private plunge pool and out door shower. As I was travelling with a friend, the resort arranged to have a second bed in the room. Our room was a little oasis. The beds were very comfortable, the wifi worked perfectly, and we were constantly stocked with bottled water, tea/coffee. Laundry was offered at no extra charge and along with housekeeping, the pool and gardens were looked after every day. The property is large and deep. The grounds are well cared for and there is a beautiful large pool that photos just do justice. The gym is very well equipped with everything you need to get your workouts in (and is also air conditioned). There are three open areas used for yoga and the beach is clean and well supervised by staff. The property is sprayed daily for pests and bugs. The Food: Simply amazing. Having stayed for 22 days we did not have a single meal twice. I was on the Detox (Panchakarma) program so my meals were specific to me and my health needs. Dislikes and allergies were taken into consideration. The ingredients were all fresh and local. No processed food or sugars. Well balanced and most of all...delicious. The chef and his team created simple yet highly flavourful and balanced meals that were healthy and made for clean eating. The Spa: Top notch and professional I worked one on one with Dr.Simsy who was my primary Ayurvedic Dr. along with Dr. Moly, and Dr.Deepthy. Dr.Simsy was always available to answer my questions and monitor my progress. I had two dedicated therapists who did my various treatments. Consider the therapists like nurses to the Drs. The therapists themselves spend a year in school to become certified to administer Ayurvedic treatments. I had a variety of treatments that ranged from full body (oily) massage to steam treatments to powder massages to buttermilk baths. Each one an experience. Yoga/Meditation: Fantastic. There are two options for yoga - Beginner or advanced. I stayed with the Beginner program taught by Mr.Anoop. Anoop has a sense of humour and puts you at ease right away. The yoga poses he teaches are not too demanding and by the end of the class you feel like you have been fully stretched out and worked out. Anoop was an excellent teacher, easy to follow and would help you correct your position if needed. Anoop also taught the meditation and nasal cleaning class. Again, easy to follow along. House Boat Outing: Included in our stay was an afternoon on a house boat. We spent a beautiful afternoon cruising the back water rivers of Kerola where we saw many birds incl King Fishers, giant lilly pads with pink flowers, and fishing nets lining the shores. We were served fruit and a variety of sandwiches, cookies, Indian snacks and coffee/tea. (I didn't think cookies were on the Ayurvedic health and wellness menu so I held strong and enjoyed a wonderful Indian coffee with milk on deck). This outing was a real treat and would consider it a highlight. Staff: The heart of the resort. To me, the staff at Carnoustie went above and beyond any of my expectations. Everyone I met, from the ladies raking leaves, to security, restaurant servers to pool cleaners, people were genuine in wanting to make my stay as peaceful and stress free as possible. Always with a smile and a kind hello. With that said, there are a few people I would like to mention by name who stood out to me during my stay: Dr.Simsy - My principal Dr. who assessed me and set me up on a path to success both during and after my program (She continues to check in on me now that I am home in Toronto) Dr.Moly - Life lessons through chakra and energy healing Dr.Deepthy - Who taught me a lot about the different treatments and how they work with Ayurvedic medicine. My two therapists Sona and Athira; who took great care of me with every treatment They carefully prepared the medicated oils, herbs, leaves etc and expertly executed in tandem rhythm. Mr.Anoop - The best Yoga/Meditation teacher....with a sense of humour...ever. Mr.Joseph Thomas - Restaurant Manager who greeted us at every meal with a smile, always happy to answer our questions and who went out of his way to arrange for a special meal and chocolate birthday cake for my friend who was travelling with me. Bosco - Who cleaned our pool and was always happy to talk with us. The Restaurant servers: Jose, Pramrrd, Rubin, Misty, Kiran, Sreejith, Athul, Anandhu and Kevin.

I stayed at this property for a 7 day healing and rejuvenation programme. It was an excellent experience throughout and exceeded my expectations. The initial consultation with Dr Mobi was detailed and very reassuring for someone with a limited knowledge of Ayurveda treatments. The doctors and therapists came across as knowledgeable, kind and caring. The daily programme of Yoga, meditation, pranic healing and Ayurvedic massages was a relaxing and uplifting experience indeed. The facility also served the most delicious and healthy food in a beautiful setting. The restaurant staff led by Joseph Thomas were exceptionally efficient and friendly. Joseph's cheerful presence and caring manner made dining an enjoyable experience. I also enjoyed my yoga lessons with Anoop. His kind manner, passion and encouraging teaching style made it a pleasurable experience for a beginner like me. I expect to return in 2024 for a longer stay at Carnoustie.

Great experience with detox program. Resort located with direct access to clean Beach. Great and healthy food. Yoga teacher (Mr Anup) was very knowledgeable and jovial who takes keen interest in teaching beginner, and advanced yoga. Dr Mobi spent great amount of time, evaluating, and providing her recommendations for healthy life, according to Ayurveda science. Also would like to thank Mr Raj who is master of healing practices who gave detailed answers to my questions and taught me special techniques for basic healing.

Most pathetic experience ever, I wonder how people rate this as good property. Looking at the reviews, we booked the property. Our holiday was turned into horrible nightmare, which one would never think of, that too after paying very premium rates. When we entered the property, it looked dead and very quite, we thought it could be due to very few guests. Ours was Zukra Pool Villa, room was spacious and bathroom was good, but wooden floor was majorly damaged both inside the room and outside pool area. Pool was dead, was not used for very long time, water was very turbid, so we asked housekeeping to clean and start water circulation, but no one responded. Later in evening, Mr. Sanjay Ganguli (General Manager) approached us and promised to get pump fixed first in the morning. Next day, after breakfast, when we returned to room, pool wasn’t fixed so called front desk almost 6-7 times, after a strong request to connect with General Manager, a lady from front desk came to room and accepted the issue with pool and offered an upgrade to higher category room. This is an instance when we realised that Carnoustie staff is taking guests so casual and have don’t care attitude. Everyone at resort was giving any excuse to avoid situation. Even the floor of higher category room was severely damaged. I went out when kids were sleeping and upon return, I found 4-5 warms (including ear warm) scrolling on the ceiling of room and could hear constant heavy noise of machine from the top of shower area. Soon, we rushed to front desk for early check out. Mr. Ganguli ascertained the issue by personally visiting the villa and suggested pest control treatment or shift to other room. He tried to convince us stating that they are fixing the rooms as this resort been idle for very long time due to covid but that doesn’t help to make our holidays any good. Service was super pathetic, we were always asked to place order to lunch while having breakfast and dinner while having lunch, that too from a limited options menu. Restaurant gets closed by 9:00 pm, there is no one to attend a small request after 9:00 pm. No activities for kids, smart pool was closed, main pool area was super silent and dirty, no activities on beach, except kids to play with sand. WIFI wasn’t working in room, doorbell in high category room wasn’t working which lead me to stand outside the villa for almost 15 minutes. Despite the fact that resort was not ready to welcome guests, they took the booking at very premium rate and have no courtesy to refund the amount for remaining 2 nights, they keep promising new date to my agent for refund. Resort is nothing more than an Ayurveda Ashram, strongly recommendation to book other property if one is going purely for holidays. The experience we had, I wonder how they can get any ratings, not even close to 3 star rating.

Wonderful spa but they will not answer your e-mails for any questions after you leave. There were herbal medication recommended by the ayurveda doctor but could not get any questions answered. I would have been a repeat customer but now I will most likely never return. It's a shame...it's a wonderful place.

Great treatments, very nice staff, good food management is a desaster
I travelled alone and spent three weeks at the resort - and really recovered very well. The medical care and treatments are exceptional and beneficial and helpful. The medical team is both excellent professionally and very caring and emphatic. The restaurant team led by Joseph is very attentive and caring, the food was very tasty, Joseph and his team were always concerned that everyone was doing well, I always felt very comfortable in the restaurant. The whole team, which often works in the background, was very friendly and helpful. The life guards on the beach also always kept an eye on the guests and tried very hard to make sure that everyone was doing well. The whole complex had suffered a bit due to Corona, but that was not so important for me, nevertheless it is necessary to renovate some things again. The place, the architecture, the bungalows are very special and testify to people who have built and designed it with a lot of intuition and knowledge. In my opinion, the current management has neither the knowledge of Ayurveda nor the intuition to run such a place and such a resort. If there were any questions or if something was not good, there was no one to talk to, there was a lack of information about Ayurveda, about the treatments, etc. It is really to be hoped that the owner will take over again soon and can also make the necessary innovations.
