I recently returned from a 22 days stay at Carnoustie Ayurveda & Wellness Resort and I can say without a doubt that my experience at the resort was life changing. Prior to booking my trip, I spent a few months researching (and reading reviews much like the one I am writing now) on where I could find the best authentic, Ayurveda experience in India. Having narrowed down my research to three resorts I decided to stay at Carnoustie as they had aa beautiful beach and it came across as a good mix of clinic and resort.
To be clear, this resort specializes in Ayurveda programs that target specific health needs such as Detox, Diabetic Management, Healing, Anti-aging, Sports Medicine and Weight loss. Treatments include specific Ayurvedic massage, Ayurvedic diet, yoga and meditation as part of the targeted program.
Once my reservation was made, I was asked for my flight information and arrival time as the resort would arrange for a car to pick us up on arrival.
(I have travelled to India twice before and knowing that the long flight from Canada and the 10.5 hour time difference can feel like a time warp I had arranged to stay at a hotel close to the airport for a night so my body could acclimatize to the time change.)
An email confirmation was sent the day before we were to be picked up indicating the name of the driver and pick up time.
We were picked up and driven the almost 2 hours South to Carnoustie, our driver very skilled at dealing with Kochi traffic.
Upon arrival our bags were whisked away while we were greeted at reception with a welcome drink and then sent on our way to lunch. Personalized menus awaited us a our reserved table where we had our first taste of an Ayurvedic meal.
From here I could probably write a novel about my entire experience while at Carnoustie but if you are like me, you are reading this to decide if you should consider booking here so I'll break it down into specific categories.
Accommodation and Property:
We stayed in a one bedroom, air conditioned villa with a private plunge pool and out door shower. As I was travelling with a friend, the resort arranged to have a second bed in the room. Our room was a little oasis. The beds were very comfortable, the wifi worked perfectly, and we were constantly stocked with bottled water, tea/coffee. Laundry was offered at no extra charge and along with housekeeping, the pool and gardens were looked after every day.
The property is large and deep. The grounds are well cared for and there is a beautiful large pool that photos just do justice. The gym is very well equipped with everything you need to get your workouts in (and is also air conditioned). There are three open areas used for yoga and the beach is clean and well supervised by staff.
The property is sprayed daily for pests and bugs.
The Food:
Simply amazing.
Having stayed for 22 days we did not have a single meal twice.
I was on the Detox (Panchakarma) program so my meals were specific to me and my health needs. Dislikes and allergies were taken into consideration. The ingredients were all fresh and local. No processed food or sugars. Well balanced and most of all...delicious. The chef and his team created simple yet highly flavourful and balanced meals that were healthy and made for clean eating.
The Spa:
Top notch and professional
I worked one on one with Dr.Simsy who was my primary Ayurvedic Dr. along with Dr. Moly, and Dr.Deepthy. Dr.Simsy was always available to answer my questions and monitor my progress. I had two dedicated therapists who did my various treatments. Consider the therapists like nurses to the Drs. The therapists themselves spend a year in school to become certified to administer Ayurvedic treatments. I had a variety of treatments that ranged from full body (oily) massage to steam treatments to powder massages to buttermilk baths. Each one an experience.
Yoga/Meditation:
Fantastic.
There are two options for yoga - Beginner or advanced. I stayed with the Beginner program taught by Mr.Anoop.
Anoop has a sense of humour and puts you at ease right away. The yoga poses he teaches are not too demanding and by the end of the class you feel like you have been fully stretched out and worked out. Anoop was an excellent teacher, easy to follow and would help you correct your position if needed. Anoop also taught the meditation and nasal cleaning class. Again, easy to follow along.
House Boat Outing:
Included in our stay was an afternoon on a house boat. We spent a beautiful afternoon cruising the back water rivers of Kerola where we saw many birds incl King Fishers, giant lilly pads with pink flowers, and fishing nets lining the shores. We were served fruit and a variety of sandwiches, cookies, Indian snacks and coffee/tea.
(I didn't think cookies were on the Ayurvedic health and wellness menu so I held strong and enjoyed a wonderful Indian coffee with milk on deck).
This outing was a real treat and would consider it a highlight.
Staff:
The heart of the resort.
To me, the staff at Carnoustie went above and beyond any of my expectations. Everyone I met, from the ladies raking leaves, to security, restaurant servers to pool cleaners, people were genuine in wanting to make my stay as peaceful and stress free as possible. Always with a smile and a kind hello.
With that said, there are a few people I would like to mention by name who stood out to me during my stay:
Dr.Simsy - My principal Dr. who assessed me and set me up on a path to success both during and after my program (She continues to check in on me now that I am home in Toronto)
Dr.Moly - Life lessons through chakra and energy healing
Dr.Deepthy - Who taught me a lot about the different treatments and how they work with Ayurvedic medicine.
My two therapists Sona and Athira; who took great care of me with every treatment They carefully prepared the medicated oils, herbs, leaves etc and expertly executed in tandem rhythm.
Mr.Anoop - The best Yoga/Meditation teacher....with a sense of humour...ever.
Mr.Joseph Thomas - Restaurant Manager who greeted us at every meal with a smile, always happy to answer our questions and who went out of his way to arrange for a special meal and chocolate birthday cake for my friend who was travelling with me.
Bosco - Who cleaned our pool and was always happy to talk with us.
The Restaurant servers: Jose, Pramrrd, Rubin, Misty, Kiran, Sreejith, Athul, Anandhu and Kevin.
