Rajah Island / 28 Nights Rejuvenation Program

Rajah Island / 28 Nights Rejuvenation Program
Premium Hospital in a Resort Setting | Healing & Wellness Property
India / Kerala / Thrissur - Lake

Year of Establishment: 2001

Rajah Island is an Ayurveda-focused treatment and rejuvenation centre established in 2001 on a 20-acre private island within the Chettuva backwaters of Thrissur district, Kerala. The property has a 13,600 sq. ft. built-up area, a published accommodation inventory of 46 cottages/rooms, and a maximum capacity of 88 patients. Its defining setting is a private island surrounded by backwaters and mangrove vegetation, creating a contained environment for structured Ayurvedic treatment and recovery. The centre is classified Green Leaf as an Ayurveda Centre by Kerala Tourism. The property forms part of Rajah Ayurveda, which operates four centres: Rajah Healthy Acres, Rajah Island, Rajah Beach and Rajah Eco Beach. The group focuses on specialised Ayurvedic treatment, preventive care and rejuvenation therapies, supported by a GMP-certified medicine manufacturing facility at Rajah Healthy Acres.

Property Design and Landscape

Rajah Island is designed around its natural island environment, with the Ayurvedic treatment centre positioned within the island and the accommodation distributed separately around the landscape. The property incorporates backwater views, mangrove vegetation, garden pathways, an internal walking path and waterfront areas, with the surrounding ecosystem supporting migratory birds and aquatic life including fish, prawns, crabs and shellfish. The treatment complex incorporates 10 treatment rooms, arranged around the concept of the Panchabhoothas, and is located away from the cottages.

The landscape also incorporates an open swimming pool, meditation and yoga areas, reading room, gym, jogging track and children’s play area. The property provides direct access to the natural character of the Chettuva backwaters, while small bridges, mangrove pathways and waterfront spaces form part of the internal environment. The setting is therefore integrated into the treatment experience rather than functioning solely as a leisure resort.

Founders and Ayurvedic Heritage

The heritage of Rajah Island is connected to the wider Rajah Group, established by A. Abdul Kader Sahib in 1935. His business initially operated in Sri Lanka before operations were later shifted to India. Rajah Ayurveda was established in 1996 by the Rajah Group with the stated objective of extending traditional Ayurvedic healing to people internationally. Rajah Healthy Acres became the group's first Ayurvedic treatment centre, followed by the establishment of Rajah Island in 2001, Rajah Beach in 2008 and Rajah Eco Beach in 2018.

The group's Ayurvedic heritage is also linked to its pharmaceutical activities. A medicine manufacturing unit was established at Rajah Healthy Acres in 1999, subsequently converted into a GMP-certified medicine factory in 2003, with a modern production plant intended to maintain consistency and affordability. The manufacturing unit received ISO certification in 2012. The group also maintains herbal cultivation and produces Ayurvedic medicines used within its centres.

Ayurveda Philosophy and Approach

Rajah Ayurveda's clinical philosophy is based on the Ayurvedic understanding of Vatha, Pitha and Kapha, with health viewed as a state of equilibrium and illness associated with imbalance. Treatment is therefore directed towards the individual's constitution, condition and contributing dietary or lifestyle factors rather than applying an identical protocol to every person. The organisation distinguishes between Shodhana Chikitsa, including Panchakarma purification procedures, and Shamana Chikitsa, which uses appropriately planned diet, lifestyle and internal medicines as a palliative approach.

The approach also incorporates Rasayana therapy as an Ayurvedic rejuvenation and preventive modality. Panchakarma is preceded by preparatory measures to prepare the body, while post-treatment care can involve continued internal medicines together with prescribed dietary and lifestyle measures. Rajah Ayurveda's wider philosophy places traditional treatment within a calm environment and considers the body, mind and soul together, supported by personalised care from qualified Ayurvedic physicians.

Personalised Treatment Planning

Treatment planning at Rajah Island begins with consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, followed by individual assessment and selection of therapies according to the patient's condition and Ayurvedic constitution. Rajah Ayurveda's clinical guidance specifies that all five Panchakarma procedures are not necessarily required for every patient; the doctor selects the appropriate Karma according to the patient's health condition and doshic imbalance. Pulse examination is used as one diagnostic method, but it is not considered sufficient on its own, with other diagnostic tools also used when required.

Following the initial consultation, a personalised diet chart is prepared, and yoga may be incorporated into the treatment course according to the patient's condition and compatibility with the prescribed therapies. At Rajah Island, treatments are generally conducted twice daily, with a main procedure of approximately one hour followed by a secondary localised procedure lasting around 30–45 minutes, giving an average treatment duration of approximately 1.5–2 hours per day.

Treatment Programs

Rajah Island's programme portfolio centres on Panchakarma and Ayurvedic detoxification, immune support and weight management, alongside condition-specific therapeutic care. Published clinical areas include diabetes, obesity, gastric ulcers, male and female infertility, eye disorders, dystonia, hemiplegia, hypertension, asthma, musculoskeletal disorders, sclerosis, peripheral neuritis, psoriasis and other skin conditions, rheumatic joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis and nervous-system disorders. Acupuncture and acupressure may also be incorporated when prescribed by the treating doctor.

The broader Rajah Ayurveda treatment portfolio includes Panchakarma procedures, Rasayana, Abhyanga, Udwarthanam, Podikkizhi, Shirodhara, Shirovasti, Tharpanam, Pizhichil, Navarakizhi, Kativasti and other specialised Ayurvedic therapies. The treatment library covers digestive, respiratory, neurological, musculoskeletal, dermatological, metabolic, reproductive and other chronic conditions, with the clinical material explicitly stating that treatment courses are individually prescribed rather than based on a fixed protocol for every condition.

Doctors and Wellness Experts

Rajah Island operates as a medically supervised Ayurvedic centre with a dedicated physician and therapist structure. The current Rajah Island clinical profile identifies a team of 6 Ayurvedic doctors and 20 therapists, led by Dr. Jayarajant, while Dr. Thushara is identified as the lead female physician. The centre has 10 treatment rooms and a treatment relaxation area overlooking the lake.

The wider Rajah Ayurveda medical structure includes Ayurvedic physicians supported by therapists, with treatment plans adjusted according to individual health status and doshic considerations.

Accommodation

Rajah Island provides 46 cottages and rooms with a maximum capacity of 88 patients, offering accommodation ranging from compact single rooms to larger waterfront cottages and suites. The accommodation portfolio includes Thushara, Economy Class, Standard Room A/C, Deluxe Room A/C, Deluxe Room A/C Type II, Superior Deluxe Room A/C, Suite, Coconut Hut, Mangrove Cottage, Lotus Cottage (Single Bedroom), Devdar Cottage, Corner House (Big), Corner House (Small), and River View Cottage (Single Bedroom). The property combines conventional rooms within the main building with individual cottages and waterfront units distributed around the island. Several categories are positioned beside the lake or backwaters, while the Mangrove Cottage is located in the more secluded part of the private island, reached through the mangrove area via a hanging bridge.

Post Treatment Care

Post-treatment care at Rajah Island follows the Ayurvedic principle that therapeutic benefits are supported by continued attention to medicines, food and lifestyle after the active treatment period. Rajah Ayurveda's clinical guidance states that Panchakarma requires appropriate preparatory measures before the cleansing procedures and that, after treatment, patients may need to continue internally prescribed medicines and follow specific dietary and lifestyle recommendations. Shamana Chikitsa similarly incorporates planned diet, lifestyle and internal medicines as part of ongoing management.

The centre's treatment philosophy therefore extends beyond the therapy sessions themselves, with the physician determining medicines, food and lifestyle guidance according to the patient's condition.

Diet and Dining

Rajah Island's restaurant provides exclusively vegetarian cuisine, with meals adapted to each patient's Ayurvedic dietary requirements. Food is prescribed according to the individual's body constitution and the doctor's recommendations, making nutrition an integral part of the treatment process rather than a separate hospitality service. The centre's published daily schedule includes doctor-advised morning juice or herbal tea, vegetarian breakfast, juice, vegetarian lunch, herbal tea or juice with Indian snacks, and vegetarian dinner.

The Rajah Ayurveda group states that many ingredients used for its therapeutic cuisine are sourced from its fruit orchards and vegetable plantations, while its wider Ayurvedic food philosophy is documented through its culinary publication Mahanasam, containing more than 125 recipes served at its institutions and discussing Ayurvedic principles and dietary practices described in classical texts. Rajah Island also conducts Ayurvedic cooking demonstrations, enabling patients to gain practical understanding of Indian cuisine and food practices associated with Ayurveda.

Wellness Activities

Yoga and meditation form part of the structured daily routine, with sessions conducted twice a day, in the morning and evening, and a portion of each session dedicated to meditation. The published schedule places the morning yoga session from 6:30–7:30 AM and the evening session from 5:00–6:00 PM. The programme is integrated with the Ayurvedic treatment schedule rather than presented as an independent recreational activity.

The island also provides opportunities for low-intensity recreation and engagement with its natural setting. Activities include walking around the island, birdwatching, cookery demonstrations, library use, carroms, chess, cards, cycling, hammocks and fishing equipment. Occasional cultural programmes include Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, South Indian classical dance and classical music, while henna sessions and saree-wearing classes are also conducted occasionally. Canoe and small-boat trips can be arranged around the island.

Facilities and Services

Rajah Island provides a dedicated Ayurvedic treatment complex incorporating 10 treatment rooms, with the treatment area located separately from the accommodation cottages. The centre also has steam rooms, a dining room, open swimming pool, meditation and yoga areas, reading room, gym, jogging track and children's play area. The island's internal walking path provides access to its backwater and mangrove environment, while the treatment complex includes a relaxation area overlooking the lake.

Additional services and recreational facilities include a library containing books in different languages, including fiction, philosophy, yoga, Ayurveda and cookery; board games; bicycles; hammocks; fishing rods and hooks; and arrangements for canoeing or small-boat excursions. The property also conducts cooking demonstrations and occasional cultural activities. The wider Rajah Ayurveda organisation maintains an Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing facility at Rajah Healthy Acres, and its medicines and oils are used within the group's treatment centres.

Sustainability and Guest Guidelines

Rajah Island's natural setting incorporates backwaters, mangroves, gardens and aquatic habitats, with the surrounding waters supporting fish, prawns, crabs and shellfish and the island providing opportunities to observe migratory birds. Rajah Ayurveda also documents wider environmental initiatives including solar panels, windmills, electric motor vehicles, earthworm composting and rainwater-harvesting ponds, together with segregation and controlled disposal of biomedical waste. However, the available material does not allocate each of these initiatives individually to Rajah Island, so their specific operational application at this property requires confirmation.

The treatment environment requires adherence to the doctor-prescribed diet, medicines, treatment schedule and daily routine.

Guest Experience and Stay Approach

Rajah Island is structured primarily around Ayurvedic treatment, rest and recovery rather than conventional resort entertainment. Its private-island setting within the Chettuva backwaters creates physical separation from the surrounding mainland, while the treatment centre, accommodation, dining and daily wellness activities are organised around a prescribed therapeutic routine. The daily schedule begins with doctor-advised internal medicines and continues through yoga, personalised meals, major and minor Ayurvedic treatments, evening yoga, further medicines and an early bedtime.

The experience combines clinical Ayurveda with a natural backwater environment, allowing patients to spend periods outside treatment walking through the island, observing birds and mangroves, using the library and recreation areas, or participating in cultural and culinary activities. The property's published material specifically positions the setting for guests seeking seclusion and a structured Ayurvedic routine rather than active tourism or nightlife. This makes the stay approach centred on treatment discipline, personalised nutrition, regular therapies, yoga, rest and quiet engagement with the island environment.

More about Rajah Island

Dining at Rajah Island is integrated into the Ayurvedic treatment routine, with food prescribed according to each guest’s body constitution, health condition and treatment requirements. The cuisine is strictly vegetarian, with meals planned by the attending Ayurvedic physician to support digestion, detoxification and overall balance. Rather than offering a conventional resort-style menu, the dining approach prioritises therapeutic suitability, simplicity and consistency. The daily schedule includes morning juice or herbal tea, vegetarian breakfast, a mid-morning juice, vegetarian lunch, doctor-advised herbal tea or juice with Indian snacks, and vegetarian dinner, served at designated times as part of the structured retreat routine.

The cuisine uses fresh ingredients, with a significant proportion sourced from the fruit orchards and vegetable plantations maintained by the Rajah Ayurveda group. Meals are prepared in accordance with individual Ayurvedic dietary recommendations rather than general guest preference, making nutrition an integral component of the treatment process. Ayurvedic cooking demonstrations are also conducted to introduce guests to traditional Indian cooking and healthier dietary practices that can be continued after the retreat.

Leisure at Rajah Island is centred on rest, nature and quiet recreation, complementing the structured Ayurvedic treatment routine. The island's 20-acre backwater setting, mangroves and internal walking path provide opportunities for gentle walks and birdwatching, with the surrounding waters supporting fish, prawns, shrimps, crabs and shellfish and occasional views of local fishermen at work. Small canoe and boat trips can also be arranged around the island, offering closer views of the backwaters and mangrove landscape.

For quieter indoor recreation, the library contains books and magazines in different languages, including subjects such as Ayurveda, yoga, philosophy, fiction, medicine and cookery. Informal leisure facilities include carroms, chess, cards, bicycles, hammocks, fishing rods and hooks, while the property also provides an open swimming pool, meditation and yoga areas, gym, jogging track and children's play area.

The property periodically introduces guests to Kerala's cultural traditions through Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, South Indian classical dance and classical music performances, together with occasional henna or Mehndi sessions and saree-wearing classes for female guests. Ayurvedic cooking demonstrations provide an additional educational activity centred on healthy Indian cuisine.

Rajah Island operates as a dedicated Ayurvedic treatment centre within a private island setting, with the treatment complex physically separated from the accommodation cottages. The centre incorporates 10 treatment rooms, designed around the Panchabhoothas concept, and provides a dedicated environment for structured Ayurvedic therapies. The treatment facility is supported by steam rooms and a treatment relaxation area overlooking the lake. Treatments are organised around an individualised medical plan, with the attending Ayurvedic physicians determining the appropriate therapies according to the guest's health condition, constitution and treatment requirements.

Ayurveda Philosophy and Treatment Approach

The clinical approach follows the Ayurvedic understanding of Vatha, Pitha and Kapha and broadly distinguishes treatment into Shodhana Chikitsa and Shamana Chikitsa. Shodhana incorporates Panchakarma, using cleansing procedures selected according to the patient's condition, while Shamana uses appropriately planned diet, lifestyle and internal medicines as a palliative approach. Rasayana Chikitsa is also part of the Ayurvedic framework, focusing on rejuvenation and the prevention or reversal of age-related degeneration. Preparatory procedures are undertaken before Panchakarma, followed by appropriate medicines, diet and lifestyle guidance after treatment.

Panchakarma and Classical Therapies

Panchakarma forms an important part of the centre's therapeutic portfolio. The documented Panchakarma protocol includes Poorva Karmam, with Snehana, Swedana, Rookshana and Ama-pachanam; Pradhana Karmam, including Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Anuvasana Vasti and Asthapana Vasti; and Paschat Karmam, including Rasayana Chikitsa, Samana Chikitsa and Samsarjana Karmam. The classical fivefold cleansing approach is therefore supported by preparatory and post-treatment stages rather than being treated as an isolated procedure.

The wider treatment repertoire includes Abhyangam, Udwarthanam, Podikkizhi, Navarakizhi, Pizhichil, Shirodhara, Shirovasti, Kativasti, Matravasti, Pichu, Parisheka Swedam, Pathrapinda Swedam, Upanaha Swedam, Valuka Swedam, Mukhalepam and Tharpanam. Condition-specific treatment protocols may additionally incorporate procedures such as Nasyam, Virechanam, Vasti, Snehavasthi, Kashayavasthi, Lepanam, Avagaham, Tailadhara and localised therapies, with the exact combination determined by the treating physician.

Medical Conditions and Therapeutic Focus

Rajah Island's published Ayurvedic portfolio covers detoxification and Panchakarma, immune support and weight management, together with treatment programmes addressing diabetes, obesity, gastric ulcers, male and female infertility, eye disorders, dystonia, hemiplegia, hypertension, asthma, musculoskeletal disorders, sclerosis, peripheral neuritis, psoriasis and other skin conditions, rheumatic joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis and nervous-system disorders. Treatment documentation also covers a wider range of condition-specific Ayurvedic approaches, with therapies selected according to the patient's presentation and doshic imbalance.

The treatment material records procedures for neurological and musculoskeletal conditions including Abhyangam, Pizhichil, Mamsakizhi, Tailadhara, Nasyam, Shirodhara, Navarakizhi and Swedanam, while other protocols may include Kativasti, Virechana, Snehavasti and Vaitharanavasti. The centre can also incorporate acupuncture and acupressure when prescribed by the doctor, alongside classical Ayurvedic treatment.

Personalised Medical Supervision

Treatment at Rajah Island is medically supervised, with the physician assessing the guest and determining the appropriate treatment combination rather than applying every Panchakarma procedure universally. The treatment material establishes that medicines are selected according to Prakriti and Dosha imbalance, while treatment plans for specific conditions are tailored to individual needs. The centre's treatment routine generally provides two treatment sessions each day: a major procedure of approximately one hour and a secondary localised treatment of approximately 30–45 minutes, giving an average treatment duration of 1.5–2 hours daily.

The daily clinical routine is integrated with internal medicines, prescribed nutrition, yoga, meditation and rest. The published schedule begins with doctor-advised internal medicines at 6:00 AM, followed by morning yoga, prescribed juice or herbal tea, breakfast and the main Ayurvedic treatment period. A further juice, lunch and secondary treatment follow, with evening herbal tea or juice, evening yoga, another dose of prescribed internal medicine and doctor-advised vegetarian dinner before a 9:30 PM bedtime.

Yoga and Meditation

Yoga and meditation are incorporated into the daily Ayurvedic routine, with sessions conducted twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. The documented schedule places the morning session from 6:30–7:30 AM and the evening session from 5:00–6:00 PM, with part of each session dedicated to meditation. Yoga is therefore positioned as a complementary component of the therapeutic routine rather than an independent recreational class.

The wider Ayurvedic treatment material also associates Yoga, Pranayama and meditation with mental and spiritual wellbeing, while specific condition-related guidance may prescribe breathing exercises, physical activity or relaxation according to the patient's needs. These practices are integrated with the broader emphasis on appropriate lifestyle, diet, medicines and treatment discipline.

Ayurvedic Medicines and Pharmacy

Medicines form an integral part of treatment at Rajah Island, with internal medicines prescribed by the attending doctors as part of the daily schedule. The group operates its own Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing facility at Rajah Healthy Acres, and the property documentation identifies the group's prepared medicines and oils as part of its treatment system. This provides an integrated relationship between the Ayurvedic hospitals and the group's medicine-production operations.

The treatment philosophy also incorporates dietary services, preventive medicine (Swasthavritta), yoga, pharmacy and patient advisory services alongside the therapeutic procedures. After Panchakarma, patients may be required to continue internal medicines and follow prescribed dietary and lifestyle recommendations as part of the post-treatment phase.

Doctors and Medical Team

The Rajah Island medical team is structured around Ayurvedic physicians and therapists, providing consultation, treatment planning and supervised delivery of therapies. The current property-specific reference identifies Dr. Jayarajant as the medical team lead, with six Ayurvedic doctors and 20 therapists, and identifies Dr. Thushara as the lead female physician. The centre's treatment complex contains 10 treatment rooms and a dedicated relaxation area overlooking the lake.

Ayurveda-Centred Daily Routine

The overall experience at Rajah Island follows a highly structured therapeutic rhythm. Internal medicines begin the day at 6:00 AM, followed by morning yoga and meditation, prescribed herbal tea or juice, vegetarian breakfast and the main treatment period. After a midday juice and prescribed lunch, the secondary treatment takes place in the afternoon, followed by an advised herbal drink or juice with Indian snacks. Evening yoga and meditation, internal medicines and doctor-advised vegetarian dinner complete the clinical routine, with bedtime scheduled at 9:30 PM.

This combination of Ayurvedic consultation, personalised therapies, Panchakarma where indicated, internal medicines, prescribed vegetarian nutrition, twice-daily yoga and meditation, and regulated rest periods forms the core of the Rajah Island treatment experience. The natural island environment and quiet setting support the treatment routine, while the medical structure ensures that therapies and medicines remain under Ayurvedic physician guidance.

  • Description

The 28 Nights Rejuvenation Program at Rajah Island is designed as an individualised Ayurvedic wellness pathway focused on rejuvenation, preventive health and overall wellbeing. Treatment is personalised according to the individual's Prakriti, dosha imbalance, current health condition, strength, lifestyle and therapeutic requirements, with an Ayurvedic physician assessing the person's needs before determining the appropriate course of care. The approach focuses on supporting overall health and addressing individual imbalances rather than following a uniform treatment protocol.

The therapeutic approach aims to support physical wellbeing and longer-term health management through individually prescribed Ayurvedic care, complemented by dietary recommendations and lifestyle modification. The physician determines the appropriate treatment according to the individual's constitution and health status, allowing the care approach to be adapted to specific requirements.

    Note:

All treatments and program components are personalised following the initial consultation with the retreat's Ayurveda doctor and the guest's health condition. Therapy protocols may vary accordingly.

Sanjay Reddy

Wonderful setting on an island just 5 minutes off the coast of Chavakkad Beach. Amazing Ayurveda hospital/resort. The doctors Dr Jeyaraj and Dr Tushara are the best in their diagnosis and treatment plan for all ailments. The staff and massage therapists are always smiling and very social. The food which is only vegetarian is again top class with the taste and freshness a constant. With a predominantly foreign guest base you meet and get to know and make friends and bonds that are forever in the common philosophy of health and wellness. That's why everyone who visits Rajah Island will definitely go back every year. The ailments are also cured if you give the doctors and therapists he time that they ask of you. And what can be said enough about the scenic beauty of the setting with the many birds that call Rajah Island their home and tbe gorgeous sunrise and sunsets that you see everyday. It's like living in Utopia.

The one difference I felt with Rajah Ayurveda is that it is an actual Ayurvedic Hospital, offering serious Ayurvedic treatments, and not just a resort providing wellness therapies. The food is incomparable, in the sense it is uniquely compatible with ayurveda. This my third visit to Rajah Ayurveda and my son
