Osteoarthritis Treatment
Osteoarthritis is the gradual breakdown of the smooth cartilage that cushions the joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced movement. It most often affects the joints that carry us through life: the knees, hips, spine, and hands. It has long been dismissed as simple "wear and tear," but that picture is outdated and unhelpfully bleak. Cartilage is living tissue that constantly renews itself, and osteoarthritis is better understood as a joint that has stopped maintaining itself than one that has simply been used up. Ayurveda understands the condition as Sandhivata, where aggravated, drying Vata settles in the joints and depletes their natural lubrication, and offers a well-developed tradition of lubricating, Vata-pacifying, and tissue-nourishing care.
