The Weight Management Program at Athreya Ayurvedic Centre addresses one of the leading contributors to morbidity in modern society—obesity and overweight—through the lens of Ayurvedic clinical wisdom. According to conventional classification, obesity is defined by a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater, while overweight falls between 25 and 29.9. However, Ayurveda emphasizes that BMI is not the most reliable indicator, as it does not account for muscle mass, which is approximately 18% heavier than fat. In this context, abdominal girth and waistline are more relevant indicators of unhealthy weight gain.
This condition, known in Ayurveda as Athi Sthoulya or Medo Dushti, is considered a precursor to a wide range of metabolic disorders. It is increasingly prevalent across age groups, including individuals in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond.
Through Athreya’s residential Panchakarma-based treatment, many patients have reported significant weight reduction—typically 5% to 7% of their initial body weight over a three-week period. In some exceptional cases, patients have achieved a reduction of up to 10%. These results are often sustained for up to 12 months, especially among those who continue to follow dietary and lifestyle recommendations. However, it is important to note that weight loss is highly individual and cannot be guaranteed.
Athreya emphasizes a cautious approach to physical activity, recommending that obese individuals avoid long-distance running to prevent knee joint damage. Instead, brisk walking is encouraged as a safer and more sustainable option.
Supportive yoga practices such as Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation), Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana), and Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana) are integrated into the program to promote long-term wellness. Yoga Nidra and meditation are also included to manage stress and anxiety, which often contribute to weight-related challenges.
This holistic and personalized approach helps participants work toward sustainable weight management and overall well-being.
